Okay, I've now got my favorite news client (40tude Dialog) and my favorite email client (Becky! Internet Mail) working. One thinks it's on XP Pro and the other thinks it's on W2K but they both work.
It turns out that if you're having problems getting your apps to work the best thing to do is to leave the computer and go out for Chinese. When you come back things will be a lot clearer.

Absolutely, "Yeff", Absolutely!
I installed (finally!) MSN Premium on my latest build, and thought it was right. But it would take forever and three days to respond, so I just turned the silly computer off, and walked away for awhile. When I rebooted, MSN was behaving beautifully!

It's one of those lessons that never stick. You invariably end up thinking, "If I just keep plugging away at this problem for a few more hours I'll figure it out, no matter how frustrated and mad I get."
When you're banging on your desk and thinking about ripping the innards out of your computer, it's probably time to head out the door for some Kung Pao Beef.
